AI cannot diagnose you or judge an emergency. Signs that mean get help now, preparing for an appointment, and care with medicines and supplements.

Why it cannot diagnose you

Describe a symptom and an AI quickly produces a plausible list of causes. A doctor, though, judges not only from what you say but from examining you, test results and your medical history. An AI can do none of that, and it does not know what you left out. The same symptom can have a minor cause or one that needs urgent care, and an AI answer cannot be used to tell them apart. Even if it says things look fine, that does not replace seeing someone.

When to get help instead of asking

If you have symptoms like those below, do not spend time asking an AI. Call your local emergency number or go to the nearest emergency department. The list is not complete: feeling clearly unlike your usual self is reason enough to seek help.

  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Sudden weakness on one side or slurred speech
  • Bleeding that will not stop
  • Confusion or being hard to wake
  • A severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the lips or throat
  • Thoughts of harming yourself

When you are struggling emotionally

Many people use AI as someone to talk to about their worries. Putting things into words can help, but an AI cannot recognise a crisis or step in. If you are thinking of harming yourself or feel you cannot cope alone, contact a person: a crisis line in your country, someone close to you, or a medical service.

Using it to prepare for an appointment

Where AI helps well is before and after seeing a professional. Use it to organise when a symptom started, what it is like and what makes it worse, and to draw up questions to ask. Afterwards, ask it to explain unfamiliar terms in plain language. Whether that explanation fits your case is something to confirm with your doctor next time.

  • Example: "I want to organise my symptoms before seeing a doctor. Ask me when it started, what makes it worse and what medicines I take. When I answer, turn it into a short note I can show the doctor."
  • Example: "Explain these terms from my appointment in simple words. Do not judge my condition; just explain what the terms mean."

Asking about medicines and supplements

Whether medicines can be taken together, whether to change a dose, or whether a supplement interacts with a prescription must not be decided on an AI's answer. The answer depends on age, weight, other conditions and other medicines. Read the leaflet in the pack first and ask the pharmacist who dispensed it or the prescribing doctor. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own without advice.

Information to keep out

Uploading a photo of test results or a prescription also sends your name, date of birth, clinic and patient number. Health information is especially sensitive. If you must include it, mask names and numbers and copy across only the values and item names. The same goes for family members' health details.

Where to check health information

Check what the AI explained against public health bodies, national health information sites, and patient guidance published by major hospitals. Recommendations change as research builds up, so see when a page was written and last updated. Be especially wary of pages pushing a particular product or treatment, and of numbers with no source.

Before you ask

Before asking an AI about your health, check:

  • Are there emergency signs now, and if so have you called for help?
  • Are you asking to understand and prepare, not for a diagnosis?
  • Have names and numbers been masked?
  • Will you confirm any decision about medicines with a pharmacist or doctor?
  • Have you checked the answer against official health guidance?
